The iconic Rolex Explorer has been around a long time for good reason: it’s simple, elegant, and works well with most anything you wear. The laid-back black dial and clean lines represented in the 214270 reference have their roots in the 14270, introduced in 1989. The 214270 was launched in 2010 with non-luminous applied white gold 3-6-9 numerals, keeping in tradition with previous designs. The shorter handset was supposedly carried over from the 36mm predecessor (214270 upgraded the case size from 36mm to 39mm) which makes this version a slightly quirky and interesting watch with great collectibility.
 
Simplicity is at the core of this quintessential tool watch. Hours, minutes, and seconds sweep across a deep black dial… and that’s about it. It’s unassuming and elegant. It works with almost all clothing, and has a spot in most all collections. At 39mm, it’s a bit more sleek and subtle than its larger Rolex sport model cousins.

This particular example could almost qualify as “mint”, except a small scratch on the 6 o’clock bracelet segment, some minor swirling on the clasp, and minor hairlines inside the bracelet closure. The crystal is absolutely perfect, with no chips, scratches, or pock marks. The crown action is smooth and the watch runs within COSC specs.
